Supporting the Environment While Saving Money on Copy Paper

May 15, 2006

In the past, schools and departments wishing to use recycled paper were forced to sacrifice cost efficiency to be good environmental stewards. Not any longer! Thanks to the efforts of a team consisting of administrators drawn from the Morningside, Medical Center and Lamont Doherty campuses, plus representatives of Students for Environmental and Economic Justice, recycled paper can be purchased for the same highly competitive price as virgin paper. In nearly all instances, the new contract price is significantly better than the price paid for both types of paper in the past.

Through a competitive bid process and the team's efforts, the Purchasing Office reached an agreement with Corporate Express, the University's preferred source for office supplies, that will ensure that 30 percent post consumer waste (PCW) recycled paper will be available to all University departments and schools at the same price as virgin copy paper. The team's testing confirmed that for general office use, including copy machines, laser printers, and faxes, 30% PCW recycled paper performs comparably to virgin paper.

Since the recycled paper program was launched in late March, thirty six University departments, including the Offices of the President, Provost, and Senior Executive Vice President, have begun using recycled paper in copiers, faxes and printers. Print Services for the past several years had adopted the 30 % PCW paper for over-the-counter services and in all self-service copiers.

In addition to supporting the environment, the recycled paper program provides buyers with easy, one-stop shopping through Corporate Express' E -Way web site, and the potential for significant savings over previous paper pricing.
